Designing for Safety: The Importance of Visible Parking Lot Markings

Austin-Seal-Coating

More motor vehicle accidents happen inside parking lots than you might expect—not just collisions between vehicles, but collisions between cars and unprotected pedestrians. Unfortunately, many wrecks of this nature happen not only because of negligence by individual drivers and walkers, but also because the parking lot itself is not laid out and marked as well as it could be.

When it comes to designing a parking lot for the safety of everyone using it, the importance of visible parking lot markings cannot be overstated. Below are some of the ways in which making sure your parking lot is lined properly, and that those lines are maintained, can be key to preventing accidents in your lot.

Keeping Traffic Flowing—and Going in the Right Directions

The primary purpose of painted parking lot markings is to make sure that drivers know where they are supposed to direct their vehicles and where they can reasonably expect other vehicles around them to be. Beyond just reducing general confusion, though, well-designed parking lots can actually be a lot more efficient than poorly designed ones in terms of traffic throughput and even total capacity.

Consider, for example, a “lane” of parking spaces that are not clearly lined to separate individual parking spaces from each other: a single driver guessing at where they are supposed to park and how much space they should leave between other cars can lead to the next driver parking in an inefficient way as well. Then, more and more drivers end up doing the same until the whole lot is a mess of traffic that no one can easily get out of. The same principle also applies to aisles and other parts of lots that drivers need to navigate through to enter or leave a parking space.

Protecting and Guiding Pedestrians

Drivers who do not know where to go because of insufficient or poorly maintained parking lot striping are also more likely to be too distracted to notice nearby pedestrians. This increases the risk of those pedestrians suffering serious injuries in an ensuing traffic collision. However, even if every driver acted perfectly reasonably and safely, a lack of visible parking lot markings can lead to pedestrians acting unsafely and, as a result, unintentionally putting themselves in harm’s way.

The purpose of a clearly marked crosswalk, for instance, is not just to alert drivers that pedestrians may be crossing the road there; it is also to tell pedestrians that they can cross the road safely at that spot and should not try to cross elsewhere. Likewise, clearly marked traffic lines for vehicles will also serve as warnings to pedestrians that they should expect oncoming traffic there and stay out of those areas if at all possible.
