What is asphalt paving?

Asphalt paving, sometimes referred to as blacktop, is a reliable ground coating that is often used for parking lots, driveways, highways, and even airport runways. It has both commercial and residential applications.

How hot is asphalt when paving?

Asphalt must be between 220 and 290 degrees Fahrenheit to be applied properly. If it falls below 185 degrees Fahrenheit, it won’t pour or compact properly.

How long does asphalt paving last?

Usually, you can expect an asphalt parking lot to last between 10 and 20 years and an asphalt driveway to last between 20 and 40 years, depending on daily use, weather exposure, and installation quality.

How thick is asphalt paving?

A typical asphalt driveway or parking lot is about three inches thick, while heavier duty asphalt can be 4 to 7 inches thick.

When was asphalt paving invented?

It may surprise you, but asphalt paving goes back to the 19th century. There are records of asphalt pavement in Pont Royal, Paris, in 1835, and in America, as early as 1870 in Newark, New Jersey. It’s a proven and reliable material that’s held up against the test of time.

How does an asphalt paving machine work?

An asphalt paver carries the hot asphalt mix that is spread by a set of augers. The asphalt is then leveled and compacted by the piece of the machine called the screed, which determines the asphalt thickness.
